German ale

The German Ale yeasts we offer are phenomenal for Kölsch and Alt, but are also great in other Ales such as Pale Ales and IPAs. Do not be hesitant and try them!


JY002 - German Ale I
This strain was isolated from one of the famous Alt breweries in Dusseldorf.  Top cropping yeast that can be fruity at the higher fermentation temperatures. Great for Kölsch and Altbier, but also for American styles.

Origin: Dusseldorf, Germany
Temperature Range: 56-70°F (16-21°C)
Flocculation: +
Attenuation: 73-77%
Alcohol Tolerance: 11%


JY005 - German Ale III
Kölsch yeast comparable to JY002, but a little more dusty. Produces crisp Kolsch beers that can be slightly tart and refreshing. Needs prolonged time to naturally clarify.

Temperature Range: 56-70°F (13-21°C)

Attenuation: 74-79%
Alcohol Tolerance:11%


JY158 - German Ale IV
German ale yeast sourced from a brewery in Washington, DC.  This strain will produce soft German beers that are refreshing and slightly fruity. Sulfur is produced during fermentation, especially at colder temperatures, but will disappear with appropriate aging or warmer fermentation temps.
